Cookies, Cookies, Cookies!

Nobody does cookies like our good friend and instructor, Lory Utz. If you want your homemade gifts and the cookie trays you put together for entertaining to be the envy of all, this is the class for you. Lory's attention to detail is legendary. Be prepared to take notes so you can keep track of the many tips on ingredients and techniques that she'll

share.

Just so you know, Lory starts planning for next year's class just as soon as this year's class is behind her. By the time November rolls around, she's truly perfected every recipe. In something like six or seven years, she's never repeated a recipe and every collection just gets better.

Be sure to come hungry. Before we start sampling cookies, we'll have homemade soups, breads and wines from Melrose Vineyards.

So bring your spouse or a couple of friends and let Lory help you kick start your holiday gifts and entertaining. You'll be glad you did!

Please note this class is on a Thursday rather than the usual Wednesday.

Because this annual class is so much fun (and so yummy), it always sells out quickly. Please don't put off making your reservations (BPA: 957-0288). We'd hate for you to miss out.

And finally...

a note from Evelyn Nores, executive director of Douglas CARES:

Dear Cooking for Charity Supporters,

It has truly been an honor to have been chosen as the recipient of the Cooking for Charity proceeds for the 08-09 season.  This year the total dollar amount received was $7,470.00!

I am excited to share with you the significance of what that means in the world of treatment for child abuse.  It means medical examinations for more than ten children,  encompassing a psychosocial, a full well-child checkup including labs and a review of their developmental abilities, such as motor skills etc.   Lots of the children at CARES have not seen a doctor or dentist in a year or more; many have never seen a dentist.  And of course the other reason for the medicals is to possibly gather evidence in the cases of both sexual and physical abuse. The medical may also assist our medical provider in reaching a conclusion of abuse having been perpetrated on the child for purposes of prosecution.

This same generous amount of giving would also purchase 190 hours of  Family Counseling for victims at Douglas CARES.  In 2008 CARES saw  227 victim families.  In the first quarter of 2009 we have seen 103  victim families.

Again, thank you for the honor of being the recipient of so many generous hearts!
